20 YEARS OF BEING A FAIRTRADE DISTRICT

On Saturday 9thMarch 2024 there was a CELEBRATION to mark the 20th ANNIVERSARY since Lancaster and Morecambe became a Fairtrade district.

Roger Dennison, the Mayor of Lancaster,  presented certificates to local children, from Torrisholme School and Lune Valley Rainbows who also received badges. All have been working on Fairtrade projects.

Margaret Rand, the group chairperson, was presented with a copy of an ‘Early Day Motion’ by Cat Smith MP, which praised the achievements over the past 20 years.

Fairtrade is one of the most effective ways of fighting poverty in the developing world and the group seek to promote Fairtrade throughout Lancaster, Morecambe and beyond, by visiting retail outlets and businesses, attending community events and organising events during Fairtrade Fortnight.

A rolling screen presentation showing a high proportion of the events that took place over the years reminded attendees of aspects of progress in this district that have been the result of all the efforts made.

The group would like to thank everyone who came along, and also to everyone who has supported the cause during the past 20 years or even earlier helping to achieve and maintain the FAIRTRADE status.
