Afternoon tea in the Town Hall Mayor’s Parlour with Councillor Margaret Pattison was an enjoyable occasion for members of the Lancaster District Fairtrade group. Margaret, the Mayor of Lancaster, showed great interest in the Fairtrade movement. She encouraged us to continue to promote Fairtrade in the knowledge that the benefits go beyond fair pay. For example, for Fairtrade to be certified there must be no child labour involved in producing them. Fairtrade also benefits the environment and sustainability. In many cases communities in a region are encouraged to work together to prevent damaging exploitation from outside opportunists such as logging and development that causes habitat loss for native wild life.
